5/1/2023 0 Comments Heal meaning![]() Many factors may delay tissue healing, including malnutrition, wound infection, and coexisting conditions, e.g., diabetes mellitus, advanced age, tobacco abuse, cancer as well as the use of several drugs, including corticosteroids. ![]() The many processes involved in the healing of a wound take 3 weeks or more to complete. ![]() In skin lesions, regrowth of epithelial tissues also occurs. Tissue healing usually occurs in predictable stages: formation of blood clots at the wound inflammatory phase, during which plasma proteins enter the injured part cellular repair, with an influx of fibroblasts and mesenchymal cells regrowth of blood vessels (angiogenesis) and synthesis and revision of collagen fibers (scar formation). The restoration to a normal mental or physical condition, esp. Surrounding skin moves toward center of wound in an effort to close the defect. Contraction of skin around scar is the result of movement of epithelial cells toward center of wound in an attempt to close the defect. D, As granulation tissue matures, marginal epithelial cells migrate and proliferate over connective tissue base to form a scar. Granulation tissue is fragile and bleeds easily. C, Fibroblasts and capillary buds migrate toward center of would to form granulation tissue, which becomes a translucent red color as capillary network develops. B, Healing may occur under a scab formed of dried exudate, or dried plasma proteins and dead cells (eschar). A, Open area is more extensive inflammatory reaction is more widespread and tends to become chronic. The healing process is more prolonged than in healing by primary intention because large amounts of dead tissue must be removed and replaced with viable cells. Redefining healing can make better patients and can make patients heal better, in both the Western and nonwestern sense.Healing by second intention occurs when there is tissue loss, as in extensive burns and deep ulcers. Redefining a successful healing as progress instead of cure can be much more encouraging to patients and can foster more contentious adherence to their medical regimen. In Western medicine, our understanding of healing is very binary. To me, this seems like a freeing, encouraging understanding of healing a chronic illness, especially a mental illness. “I went to get changed so I could go to work the next day.” “I went to get changed.” One of the things that stood out to me the most in Haliburton’s informants’ descriptions of Ayurvedic healing was that patients referred to what happened during an Ayurvedic healing session as “change” instead of “healing”. This book was my first foray into the ideas behind Ayurvedic healing. It serves as a case study of how patients feel and what choices they make when Western medicine, Ayurveda, and religious healing are all, to some extent, accessible healing options for mental ailments. The book is an ethnography of patients in Kerala, India. I recently read Murphy Halliburton’s Mudpacks and Prozac (which I would highly recommend). In a time where death sentences have become chronic diseases, some definitions of health and healing fit some diseases and circumstances better than others. This lack of a universal understanding of health and healing, I believe, is actually a positive thing. If there is not even a universal definition of what “good health” is, there cannot be a universal definition that describes “healing”, or how to get to “good health”. Good health and bad health, both inside and outside the realm of Western medicine, are loaded, subjective terms with moral implications (I’ll explain this further in a later post). ![]() For starters, in order to have a universal definition of healing, you have to have a universal definition of good health and bad health. If you are sick and you get better, you are healed. I had always assumed that the definition of healing was universal.
